This challenge awaits you:

IAV Fahrzeugsicherheit GmbH & Co. KG is a competent and reliable partner for the automotive industry in the field of vehicle safety. In order to be able to protect occupants in future vehicles in the event of accidents, vehicle safety must have answers to tomorrow's questions today. New vehicles are equipped with an interior camera for vehicle occupant monitoring. This also enables the integration of other functions such as seat assignment or seatbelt recognition of vehicle occupants using image processing methods, etc. Synthetic data plays an important role in training and testing these camera functions. The aim of this thesis is to develop a realistic virtual replica of vehicle interiors, vehicle occupants with different body positions and objects (such as child seats, bags, etc.) based on game engines. Ground truth values such as 3D position of each pixel, segmentation masks of vehicle occupants, belts, seats etc. are also to be taken into account.
The topic includes a three-month internship, followed by a six-month contract to write the final thesis.

Your Tasks:

  • You will examine existing methods for simulating vehicle interiors and occupants.

  • You will develop a concept for the virtual reproduction of vehicle interiors and occupants using game engines (e.g. Blender, Unreal).

  • You recreate realistic scenarios of the virtual occupants such as hand on the steering wheel, different belt positions, phone/object in hand, feet on the dashboard.

  • You generate ground truth values via the engine (depth information for each pixel and segmentation masks).

Necessary Skills:

  • Ongoing studies in computer science, computer engineering, electrical engineering or comparable courses of study
  • Experience with game engines such as Blender or Unreal is essential
  • Programming skills
  • Communication and teamwork skills as well as initiative and reliability
  • Good knowledge of German or English (min. B2 level)

Desired Skills:

  • Enthusiasm for innovative solutions and research
