Thesis - Extension of a Dashboard Application for Use in the Manufacturing Industry

______

Students   —  Thesis

Gifhorn

This challenge awaits you:

Modern machines and systems – in particular vehicles – generate large amounts of measurement data during operation, which is exchanged between sensors, control units and operating units. This data is highly relevant both in the development and testing of new systems and in the operation of series products. The key challenge is to extract the relevant information from these large data volumes and to prepare and visualize it according to specific needs.

At IAV, a measurement data management system is operated that enables measurement data from a wide range of applications – from vehicles and test benches to complex systems – to be stored, structured and evaluated automatically. The analysis results are made available to users directly within this system and support, for example, troubleshooting in complex systems as well as the validation and release of functions, up to entire projects and product generations.

One component of this system is the dashboard application. It enables analysis results from measurement data to be visualized interactively and prepared for use in current application cases, particularly in the vehicle, testing and analysis environment. As part of this thesis, the aim is to investigate how this application case can be extended to the manufacturing industry.

The objective of the thesis is to research relevant requirements from the manufacturing environment and derive new functional and technical requirements for the dashboard application. On this basis, missing features are to be identified, designed, prototypically implemented and subsequently validated. The thesis therefore combines requirements analysis, conceptual design, software development and evaluation in a practical environment.

Your Tasks:

  • You research relevant use cases in the manufacturing industry for a data-driven dashboard application
  • You analyse which functions are still missing in the current system for these use cases
  • You design suitable functional and technical extensions
  • You prototypically implement selected features in the existing system
  • You validate the developed solution using suitable use cases or tests
  • You document the results and derive recommendations for further development

Necessary Skills:

  • Degree in progress in Computer Science, Business Informatics, Data Science, Mechatronics, Production Engineering or a comparable field of study
  • Good programming skills in Python
  • Interest in data-driven applications, visualization and software development
  • Analytical and structured way of working
  • Ability to systematically research requirements and translate them into technical concepts
  • Confident use of Git and modern development tools

Desired Skills:

  • Initial experience with TypeScript and React
  • Basic knowledge of web development and API-based systems
  • Initial experience with Python web frameworks, e.g. FastAPI
  • Knowledge of data processing, e.g. with Pandas, SQL or relational databases
  • Interest in dashboards, visual analytics and UI/UX for technical applications
  • Initial exposure to test automation
  • Interest in industrial processes and manufacturing-related topics

Remuneration is based on our collective bargaining agreement. The current monthly salary for this position is EUR 1.012.
